[LinkedIn post] Cycloidal Pendulum
While reviewing Lagrangian mechanics, a notable application is the cycloidal pendulum, first described by Christiaan Huygens in his 1673 publication.
Unlike a simple pendulum, the period of a cycloidal pendulum is independent of its amplitude. This means it maintains the same rhythm regardless of its swing width, a property known as isochronism. Huygens utilized this principle to design more accurate pendulum clocks.
I have developed a Python simulation showcasing this effect. The accompanying video displays five cycloidal pendulums, each with different initial conditions, all oscillating with an identical period.
